Hong Kong Tea Restuarants

Hong Kong Tea Restaurants are hugely popular places for breakfast and lunch, offering a fusion of British and Cantonese style. One of my favorites is the Hong Kong Milk Tea and the local version of French Toast, as per the main picture.

The milk tea is an iconic drink for HK, a reflection of it’s British past and the nature of the Cantonese people to develop their own style. The tea is a usually a combination of several black teas which may include Ceylon, Assam, Black tea, English breakfast and maybe others. Each tea shop that prides itself on it’s tea will keep it’s recipe a close held secret. The other vital ingredient is evaporated milk, sometimes a mixed with a little condensed milk if sweetness is desired.

A popular menu item is the plated meal set including chicken or pork chop served with a bread roll, sausage and maybe baked beans, a piece of tomato plus a squirt of mayonnaise on the side, or a simple set including pork chop, toast, omelette and milk tea, as pictured above. Other menu items may include the butter pineapple bun, hot dog bun, noodles, won ton, omelette, macaroni and ham, to name just some of the choices.
