Hong Kong Airport to the City: 5 Ways from $HK33

Hong Kong International Airport is located about 34km (21miles) from the downtown area of Hong Kong (Tsim Sha Tsui) by road and in this article, we are going to uncover the best ways to get to and from the airport.

As you can see, there is a substantial cost difference between the different transfer options and it really depends on what suits you time-wise, comfort wise, and price wise. I have used all these options without complaint. The advantage of the Airport Express is that is fast, super convenient, and that it is unaffected by traffic.

Airport Express (train)

The Airport Express takes passengers to Central in just 24 minutes. Quick and comfortable, trains depart at about 10-minute intervals from 05:54 to 23:28 and approximately 12-minute intervals from 23:28 to 00:48 daily. Also note, for Airport Express customers, free shuttle bus services are available at Kowloon Station and Hong Kong Station to take you to most major hotels and transport interchanges.

Group Tickets: Group of 2 ($75 per person), Group of Three ($70 per person), Group of four ($62.5 per person) based on travel between the airport and Kowloon. This makes it really competitive against splitting the cost of a taxi fare!

Same Day Return Ticket: The return journey is FREE.

Round Trip Ticket: The return journey can be made anytime within 30 days (7.5% discount)

Octopus Card: it’s the local transport card which can be used on buses, MTR and Airport Express and it does offer a small discount over standard ticketing.

Airport Express Travel Pass: one ride on the Airport Express plus unlimited 3 days use of MTR ($250) or two rides on the Airport Express  plus unlimited 3 days use of MTR ($350)

Super Saver Tip: For those traveling light and wanting to use the MTR can take the S1 or S56 bus from the airport to MTR Tung Chung Station for HK$3.50. You can then take the MTR to Kowloon Station/Hong Kong Station for a total journey cost of around HK$28.

 

Taxi to/from HKIA

Taxis are readily available, the cost from the Hong Kong Airport to Central would come to around HK$295, and from Hong Kong Airport to Kowloon around HK$250.

Note that there are three types of Taxi denoted by color:

RED –  Urban taxis connect the Airport with Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and parts of the new towns of Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin and Tseung Kwan O (urban taxis can go anywhere in Hong Kong except southern Lantau Island).

GREEN –  New Territories taxis connect the airport with the New Territories, except those parts of the Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin and Tseung Kwan O served by urban taxis.

BLUE –  Lantau taxis connect the airport with the rest of Lantau Island.

Baggage: Taxis can carry about three suitcases in their boot (trunk). You are also allowed to carry luggage inside the car and the driver does have the right to levy a small fee for luggage carried but this is not often enforced.

Passengers: Most taxis are licensed to carry 5 people. Passengers are required by law to wear a seatbelt. Children under the age of 3 are not counted. But do consider this in tandem with the above point about luggage. Five people and five big bags is unlikely to all fit.

Hotel Coaches & Limousines to/from HKIA

There are buses that run between the airport and selected hotels costing from HK$120 to HK$150.  Limousine services start from HK$550. The counters are located inside the Coach Station of Terminal 2 or Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1, or contact in advance via the below numbers
